Cannabidiol Oil is one of the 104 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids and is the second most prevalent active ingredient derived directly from Cannabis sativa, the hemp plant which is the cousin of the marijuana plant.[1] Its origins naturally raise the question of its hazards and long-term effects, however, CBD provides the pain relief and anti-inflammatory benefits of cannabis without the psychoactive effects of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC- the compound that makes you high. With an increased amount of testing and research in the last few years, CBD has become less condemnable and more desirable.

Kate Wilson and Katy Weber of Sundara K Beauty, a fledgling British brand, are aiming to change consumer perspectives and opinions on CBD through their skincare range. Their ethos is to promote wellness by ensuring the balance between body and mind, a balance they believe to be visible and reflected on our skin.  Their aim is to help customers maintain healthy skin while tackling issues such as acne, inflammation and dryness with their star product, The Face Serum, made with natural ingredients and organic cannabidiol oil. ‘It’s completely natural. It is a game changer for sure in the skin industry. CBD binds to receptors in the skin known as TRPV-1, helping to reduce sensations of heat, itching and even pain. Just like most natural oils used in skin care, our serum is full of fatty acids and antioxidants from hemp seed oil and argan oil making it an excellent choice for people with dry skin and eczema.’

A native of Telluride, Colorado, Weber met Wilson when she moved to London some twenty years ago. ‘I’ve traveled the world honing my interests in wellness, nutrition, and essential oils. My older brother Brian Kingsford is a massage therapist/cannabis consultant who ran the Peaks, 5* resort spa. A couple of decades down the line we met Kate Wilson, casting director/yogi/sustainable beauty enthusiast, and the brand was born’ (Katy and her brother founded PH+, they sell high end CBD products). Wilson reveals that it was her enthusiasm for Argan oil and Weber’s background in CBD oil that brought them together. ‘I started going to Morocco about twenty years ago when my sister bought a house there. I fell in love with the colors, the smells and the people. I discovered argan oil, and being an avid fan of only natural products, started using it on my face and body. I wanted to start something up in the UK a few years ago, but I got caught up in life’s whirlwind and my project never really came to fruition. I was introduced to a German man called Ulysses, who has an argan farm out near Essaouira.  We went to visit the farm and see how the oil is made. It was fascinating’, says Wilson. ‘When I met Katy, we started to discuss the benefits of mixing argan oil  with organic CBD, and that was how Sundara K was created. We have the same outlook and ambitions, which is pretty rare, and I guess you could say it was an immediate meeting of minds.’

‘The star ingredient CBD, known for its reputation in the wellness world, has incredible powers when it comes to the skin. Inflammation in skin causes acne, rosacea and eczema. Cannabinoids are anti-inflammatory and full of antioxidants that help treat those problems’, explains Weber. Sundara K’s Facial serum promises to help heal your skin - whether it suffers from post-sun or windburn at high altitudes if you’re a skier or a hiker - and maintain its moisture levels to keep up the hydration and elasticity. ‘It is ultra-hydrating for the skin in addition to helping reduce sunspots, wrinkles and improving elasticity by restoring hydro lipids. It’s a real all-in-one solution and deals with all those skin complaints simultaneously, which is what makes our Sundara K facial serum, so amazing.’

The texture of the serum is exquisite. It has all the qualities of a luxury skin oil, highly nourishing and refined, not too thick and doesn’t leave that greasy residue you get with some face creams. If you’re a fan of face oils such as rosehip or squalane, or even essential aromatherapy oils, Sundara K’s offering should definitely find its place among your night-time elixirs. We recommend using it either under, or combined with, your regular moisturizer, applied post-cleansing and toning to pamper and replump your skin after the stresses of the day. With regards to sourcing Sundara K’s organic CBD oil, there are still difficulties with legislation in the UK, and the US is somewhat a grey area, so Weber and Wilson opt for Pure Hemp Plus (P.H.+), ‘a purveyor of the absolute best, organic CBD and hemp. It is completely legal in the UK and US markets. CBD-oil-based beauty products are exploding onto the market as the therapeutic benefits of cannabinoids become better understood and the drive for more natural, sustainable skin care increases, another of the main reasons why we have positioned ourselves at the pinnacle of premium, ethical practices. Our organic CBD oil is made using the whole plant extraction method. This means that the “full spectrum” of the plant’s chemical and botanical compounds, such as terpenes and phytocannabinoids, are included in the oil.’ CBD can be sold in the UK, as long as it contains less than 0.3 percent THC.[2]

As far as the side effects of topical use go, Weber insists that as with any skincare product, a simple skin test should reveal any CBD intolerance. Furthermore, due to its exclusion of THC, CBD oil products also removes the risk of addiction or intoxication.  According to a report from the World Health Organization, “While the number of studies is limited, the evidence from well controlled human experimental research indicates that CBD is not associated with abuse potential.”[1] It only made sense for Katy Weber the CEO of Pure Hemp Plus to launch a plant-based beauty oil, when you understand that plants make for the best natural skincare ingredients, you’ll start to look at your skincare much differently. Katy has been passionate about health and wellbeing throughout her life. Her journey began with a successful wellbeing clinic that she established in Colorado and continues today with PureHemp Plus.
