Traditional Slovak cuisine is full of wonderful tastes and flavors. What better way to begin a meal than a starter? Well in Slovakia, a meal starts with a soup!
People eat soup all year round here, whether it’s the height of summer or the depths of winter. Soups are part of every lunchtime menu and available à la carte in all the eateries. Whether you prefer broths, chunky soup or creamy soup, there’s something to suit every palate.Traditional soups are usually more wholesome and filling than others, to help withstand the cold weather and blankets of white snow that cover the Slovak villages in winter. But there’s one soup that you really have to taste, whatever the season, but not in any old eatery. Slovanská piváreň, is a restaurant on the other side of the Danube in Bratislava’s largest borough Petržalka, and on the menu for its customers is a creamy garlic and potato soup served in a bread bowl (Cesnakový krém v bochníku). So, what’s the best way to eat it? The bread gradually soaks up the soup, which gives a wonderful texture as you eat. The secret is not to eat your soup too fast – if you do, it won’t have time to soak into the bread and the bread will be too hard. Soup spoons at the ready!
